Early Newcastle Try gives Trentham U15s a wake up Call

On the last game of the year Trentham entertained a big Newcastle side down at New Inn Lane.

Right from the kick of the visitors displayed there physicality and maturity dominating the opening phases with their powerful forward runs. Trentham gave away penalty after penalty with their early poor tackle technique playing into the visitors arms. Newcastle continued their foray up field and soon crossed the line for a well deserved try and conversion Trentham 0 Newcastle 7 - Game on!

Thankfully this awoke the sleeping hosts and they started to up the effort. Unfortunately both teams failed to heed the referees interpretation on the high tackle and much of the early play was fraught with penalties.

Finally the game started to settle and the hosts began to put some phases together allowing Tristian to find space between the centres to power his way over for the first try.

Newcastle continued to use their powerful forward running game but now Trentham started to tackle low bringing the runners down before they could get going. Good field position from a penalty allowed the boys in green to move the ball quickly from the lineout releasing Sullivan to round the opposition and score a try that he subsequently converted.

Trentham rolled the changes with Joel coming on at Fly Half, Ben Gibson moving to full back and James Mullaney taking a rest.

The hosts were moving the ball well now and stretching the opposition. Further tries from Ben Twigg and Elijah Stone gave Trentham a 22 - 7 Lead at half time.

Although the visitors never gave up they spent much of the second half pinned in their own half. The tide on discipline also started to turn with many more of the penalties being awarded to the hosts as the visitors became increasingly frustrated. Ben Twigg was first to secure his brace scoring a nicely engineered try coming off his wing to take a pop pass from the fly half.

From the re-start Trentham pushed up field again and continued to pound the opposition line until finally the referee's patience was exhausted as the visitors continued to infringe close to their line leaving him no option but to award a penalty try to the home side.

Newcastle then had a rare period in the Trentham half but the hosts were awarded a scrum on their own 10m line after the visitor spilled the ball. Scrum half James Nightingale picked up at the base and went blind to outpace the cover and score a delightful individual try.

Newcastle's frustration was beginning to get the better of them and when one of their players high tackled James Nightingale before swinging him round and throwing him on the floor the ref had little option but to issue a yellow card.

Tristian finished of proceedings to secure his second try of the game under the posts which was converted by Joel Bezus. Trentham were deserved winners but well done to Newcastle for a hard fought contest.
Final Score Trentham 44 Newcastle 7. Tries De Jager (2) Twigg (2) Nicely, Stone, Nightingale. Conversions Nicely, Bezus.
