On a cold Mother’s Day morning Trentham welcomed Burton’s Under 8s to New Inn Lane. Our team consisted of Max, Lauchlan, Will, Lucas, Steffan and Elliot, whilst Burton brought 9 players.

After a short warm up the first match began. Right from the start it was evident that Trentham were on their game scoring five tries in five minutes. The main contributor to this was Max who scored three, with Lucas and Lauchlan chipping in with tries. Defensively, the boys worked really hard and kept their discipline.

The second match saw Trentham show great handling skill and they moved the ball with confidence. Of particular note in this game was a brilliant piece of scavenging for the ball by Will who then sprinted up the line before offloading to Max who ran in the try. Will also scored a great try as did Steffan who showed a clean pair of heels to outpace the Burton defence. Max scored another try as did Lauchlan. Lucas was unfortunate to be tripped by a Burton player as he surged for the line. Elliot made some great tags.

The coaches set the boys a challenge for the next game to make a turnover using the six tag rule and they duly obliged. Some great tagging all round helped to blunt the Burton attack and some excellent passing helped to create further tries.

For the next game the boys were challenged by the coaches to score a try in which every player touched the ball in one phase of play. Despite some initial confusion they achieved it with Max rounding off an excellent team try. Also on the scoresheet in this game were Elliot, with a magnificent side step try, Lucas, with a weaving run, Max, with a sprint through the middle of the pitch and Will with a superb pick up and dash for the line.

In the final match the boys maintained their momentum and coped well with the physical demands of the game. Tries continued to come with Lauchlan scoring a fine individual try and Steffan sprinting away to score.

Overall, it was a great morning of rugby, the boys acquitted themselves well. They are developing into a good team unit and are looking to play more expansive rugby. Whilst we need to work on picking the right time to make a pass, the progress they are showing is really pleasing.

Thank you as ever for the parents whose support for the boys is always appreciated.

Man of the Match – This really could have gone to anyone in green, however after careful consideration it was decided to have a joint award this week for Max, for his try scoring exploits and Will for his all round great play. Well done to all the boys.
