Trentham started the new season off with a win after an impressive victory over league favourites Cleobury Mortimer at New Inn Lane. However it was the visitors that took the lead early on by taking advantage of the home teams indecisiveness. The home team responded with some excellent phases of play and Captain Josh Collins cut the away teams defence open with a powerful run for Trentham’s first try. 10 minutes later Captain Fantastic Collins again went over in almost identical fashion. Trentham increased their dominance with some excellent handling from the backs resulting in winger Adam Flowers going over in the corner. Winger Jay Turnock failed to convert two excellent runs to increase Trenthams lead, however Ed Ramsdale jinked his way through the away teams defence for another try which he himself converted. The last play of the half saw Jay Turnock make it third time lucky with a powerfull surge to go over in the corner to give Trentham a commanding lead at half time.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Cleobury test Trenthams defence on numerous occasions. Spurred on by some poor discipline from Trentham they almost capitalised when both Josh Adams and Josh Collins saw yellow for some questionable offences. Trentham somehow managed to weather the storm and put the game out of reach for Cleobury when Jono Phillips’s skillfull offload led to Tom Turnock Crashing over in the corner for Trenthams final try. All in all a well deserved win for new coach Kieran Healey and his men who next week face another difficult test in newly promoted Ecclesall.
