Trentham's U13s took to the field on Wednesday night in only their second real game of the season. The squad was made up of a number of players currently playing up at U14, a number of under 12s playing up for the evening and a number of new players or players that are unable to play and train on Sunday.
Trentham opened well with the forwards winning good ball and releasing Oliver to sprint down the pitch and score his first try for the club. Dan missed the conversion.
It was not long before Longton hit back with probably their best player, playing at 8 breaking free and crossing the line to even the score. the conversion was missed. it wasn't long before the same player again took off down the pitch outpacing all the Trentham backs to claim his second with the conversion added.
Trentham continued to play well but the obvious lack of game time and training together led to misunderstandings and spilt balls. Both sides turned overmuch possession and one such turn over led to Longton's No 8 crossing the line for his third try.
The home coaches rallied the troops and encouraged them that they were still in this game. the words had the desired effect and the home side became more dominant up front clearing rucks and running at the opposition. Good work from Ethan James through the middle of the park had the visitors back pedalling and swift hands from Kian and Dan freed Caleb to burst through the centres and sprint to the line for an unconverted try. Half time Trentham 10 Longton 19.
Trentham made a few changes in the second half with Kian moving in to prop for Logan, Caleb and Oliver swapping positions and various other positional changes. This appeared to make Trentham more dominant in the forwards with a strong scrum allowing Tyson to secure a number of balls against the head.
Trentham closed the gap when their scrum half broke right and drove for the line to crash over for a try, unfortunately the conversion was missed.
Longton then hit back however when, guess who, their no 8 picked up at the scrum and broke down the blindside to score his 4th in the corner, the conversion fell short.
The home side were next to score when the ball appeared to squirt out of the scrum and Caleb collected and took off down the middle of the pitch to score under the posts. the conversion was added to make the score Trentham 22 Longton 24 with 2 minutes to go.
Despite their best efforts however Trentham were unable to score again and the game ended with a close win to Longton
Well played to both sides in a thoroughly well matched entertaining game of rugby
