As part of the continuing development of the Trentham RUFC under 12 squad they entered the Leicester Tigers round of the Landrover Premiership Cup. The tournament was held at Oakham on the 23rd March 2014. Supported by a full coach of parents the team travelled on its first competitive adventure outside of Staffordshire.
The Team, which was courageously skippered by Joel Bezus, played three games on a group basis. The first two games against Coalville and Lutterworth were comfortably won and the final game against Bury Saints Edmunds would determine who would progress to the finals.
After a hard fought game which ended 1-1 the winners of the league were determined by the number of try’s scored against the other group members. Unfortunately Trentham had scored one less try and were therefore eliminated from the competition. Bury Saint Edmunds eventually lost in the final to Wymondham who were the overall winners.
All players acquitted themselves admirably and were a credit to themselves and the club and as a result the man of the match trophy was awarded to the whole team.
However, as part of the tournament the organiser and the sponsors shortlisted a number of players for the spirit of rugby award. This was won by Connor Cooper, Trentham's brutal and energetic prop who’s mild heart and well-mannered approach to the game won him this prestigious award.
As well as winning an individual trophy, Connor also won training equipment for the club’s junior section. During Connor’s first interview with the local press he commented “that is was a honour to win this and thanked the organisers for a lovely day of rugby.”
A thoroughly successful and enjoyable day of rugby
